Candidate Speeches Wednesday 8 September
Candidates standing for election to the 2011 ASA Executive Committee will have the opportunity to address the membership in a series of speeches planned for Wednesday the first week after the semester break.
Current President Rawa Karetai will be Master of Ceremonies as each of the 19 candidates presents their case for why students should vote for them.
"With major education issues surrounding loans and allowances, retention, capping of courses, the perenial increase in student fees, the new Student Amenities Centre development and the shadow cast by the Education (Freedom of Association) Amendment Bill, candidates have a lot to consider and hopefully a lot to say," said Mr Karetai.
He added, "I hope we get a group of serious and sensible individuals wanting to contribute and make a difference as opposed to getting a gold star on their CVs, but it's all down to the members."
Copies of the speeches will be available on YouTube and as a link off the main voting page for those students who cannot attend.
International Debt Collection of Student Loans
Associate Finance Minister Peter Dunne is considering the use of international debt collection to claw back some of the money owed by students who have since left the country and defaulted on student loan repayments.
15% of those with student loans owe 20% of the $11 Billion debt (and growing) which ironically sits on the Government books as an asset. The Minister however does not believe the new measure will be entirely successful as there is limited information about the final destinations of many people making the job of chasing them down that much tougher. The reality is that the Government will continue to write down the asset and write the defaulters' debts off the books as many will never return.
